A practical alternative to Alpha Progression

Consider GymEvo for free workout planning, logging, periodization, and calorie tracking, with optional AI plan generation and automatic progression. You do not need Premium to follow a routine and track your progress. If you want the added automation, GymEvo Premium is listed at $44.99 per year, compared with Alpha Progression Pro at $79.99. That is a $35 annual difference at the published prices, though the two products are not feature-for-feature substitutes. GymEvo pricing, Alpha Progression pricing.

We publish GymEvo. This comparison uses publisher documentation and our product inventory, checked on 7 September 2026, rather than a hands-on test of every app, apart from one clearly labeled personal impression of Boostcamp's interface. Prices are published US-dollar rates and may vary by store and region.

What Alpha Progression Pro includes

Alpha Progression Pro combines per-set weight and rep recommendations with plan generation, RIR tracking, mesocycle and deload planning, multiple gym profiles, charts, and plate and warm-up calculators. Its published price is $12.99 monthly or $79.99 annually, with a 14-day annual-plan trial for new customers. The free app supports logging but excludes recommendations. If you use that combination regularly, staying can make sense. A cheaper app is only a saving if it supports how you train.

GymEvo: AI plans, progression, and calorie tracking

GymEvo's free tier covers the core tools for progressing in the gym. Choose a free library program or create your own routine, configure rep ranges, log sets and RPE, use rest timers, and compare previous performance. You can keep using these features without subscribing.

Optional Premium uses AI to generate a personalized plan from your experience, equipment, goals, and preferences. It also calculates progression targets from logged performance, with an optional energy check.

Periodization is free: select a prebuilt linear, reverse linear, weekly undulating, or 5x5 strength example cycle, or save a custom multi-week schema. You can use a planned cycle for a main lift and rep-range progression for another exercise. These are exercise-level planning tools, not a claim of identical Alpha Progression mesocycle functionality.

Food, calorie, macro, and bodyweight logging are also available in GymEvo. Premium adds AI plan generation, automatic progression, full charts, progress reviews, warm-up tools, and other training and nutrition features. It costs $6.99 monthly or $44.99 annually; check trial eligibility in the app. US App Store, free versus Premium breakdown.

The tradeoff: Alpha Progression explicitly documents RIR and multiple gym profiles within its dedicated planning toolkit. GymEvo's appeal is its combination of AI plan generation, configurable progression, free periodization, and calorie tracking. Choose based on which workflow you need, without assuming either app reproduces every feature of the other.

Boostcamp advertises free performance-based progression, making it worth checking if cost is your main concern. That does not establish that it replicates Alpha Progression's recommendations or deload planning. We tried the app and found the interface cluttered and unintuitive, which is a personal opinion rather than a documented limitation. Boostcamp feature description.

Fitbod supports saved workouts with updated sets, reps, and weights, so generated programming can still retain a familiar exercise template. Jefit's description of load reductions likewise does not establish equivalence to Alpha Progression's RIR and mesocycle tools.

The closest tools to Alpha Progression's RIR and mesocycle planning are Mesostrength and the RP Hypertrophy app, which add volume landmarks on top, at roughly double and quadruple the annual price. Both are covered in our progressive overload apps compared roundup.

How to decide whether to switch

Recreate one normal training week before moving your routine. Check your rep ranges, available weight increments, exercise substitutions, and any lighter weeks you plan. Compare the actual targets and the effort required to adjust them.

If Alpha Progression's RIR, gym profiles, and planning already serve you well, keep them. If you want your workout plan, progression, food log, and bodyweight together, use GymEvo's free tier for your ongoing training. Premium is optional if you want AI plans, automatic targets, or expanded features. Explore GymEvo.
